Syncarpella was introduced by Theissen and Sydow (1915) as a genus of Montagnellaceae within Dothideales. A detailed description of S. tumefaciens can be seen in Barr and Boise (1989). Syncarpella was considered closely related to Leptosphaeria, and was treated as a synonym (Clements and Shear 1931). Syncarpella is characterized by its abundant globose, ovoid to turbinate ascomata with minute papillae which are seated on a common basal stroma and which are erumpent through fissures in the host tissues (Barr and Boise 1989). Teichospora was introduced by Fuckel (1870), and was typified by T. trabicola, with four more species included, i.e. T. brevirostris Fuckel, T. dura Fuckel, T. morthieri Fuckel and T. obducens (Schumach.) Fuckel. Only T. brevirostris and T. trabicola were kept in Teichospora (Barr 1987b).
